All our Maine Coon kittens come with 6 weeks free pet insurance. We do recommend that you take out suitable insurance cover for your Maine Coon before the free policy expires. We hope that you would not need to make a claim but veterinary fees can be expensive and the peace of mind that insurance brings is well worth the cost.
Since January 2005, pet insurance is fully regulated by the FSA (Financial Services Authority) and so we, in common with other breeders, cannot advise on specific insurance policies. However, we can give general guidance on this website.
Pet insurance is now available from a variety of sources - specialist insurers, supermarkets, banks, insurance companies etc.
As with any insurance purchase, please look at the small print of any pet insurance policy and check what is or is not provided. For example:
- Is there an “annual limit” for vet fees and is this for all claims or just each individual claim ?
- Does the policy cover conditions “for life” or just for 12 months ?
- What is the “grace period” before insurance takes effect (new policies may only cover for illness after 7 or 14 days) ?
- Does the policy include any overseas cover or is this an extra (and do you really need it) ?
- What preconditions are there (e.g. regular inoculations) ?
- Is the excess charge a flat fee or a percentage of the claim ?
- Breeding risks are rarely covered except for specialist policies - for pet owners, this is of course not an issue
As a result of these and other checks, you will be able to identify which policy represents value for money for you and your Maine Coon. Remember that the cheapest policy may not be the best value for your own circumstances.
